My first Otterhound was a rescue named Sam. He was a joy for 14 years. In 1989, I brought a young tri-colored hound home from England. Harvey was my first show dog and first Champion. In 1993, Harvey sired a litter that began the long collaboration between Riverrun and Sonsie Dogs. A puppy girl from that litter named Shona joined us in Illinois. She earned her championship and went on to whelp the first Riverrun litter in 1997. Though I lost Gus from that litter at age 12, I’m privileged to still have his brother Alvin. Shona’s grandpup Gracie now calls Riverrun home, as does her son Finnegan, who is the 6th generation in an unbroken line of Otterhounds with AKC tracking titles. Having been blessed to share my home with long-lived hounds, and working with them as both nursing home visiting dogs and in the R.E.A.D program for children, I breed first for health and temperament, and then consider other qualities.
